Alice Virginia Poindexter

Alice Virginia Dickerson Poindexter passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Louisa Health Care Center at the blessed age of 100 years. She was born in Louisa County on July 2, 1912 to the late John H. and Ottie B. Dickerson. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers: Henry, Marion and Leroy Dickerson; two sisters, Edna Earl Grooms and Nettie Morris; niece, Alberta Ford and nephew Matthew Grooms.

Alice attended school in Louisa County before traveling to New Jersey to be with her sister Nettie. It was there she met and married James B. Poindexter, who also predeceased her. James and Alice were married 65 years and the union was blessed with two children, Carol and James, Jr.

Alice and James were active members of Bright Hope Baptist Church, Montclair, NJ until relocating to Louisa in 1981. Alice rejoined her childhood church, Galilee Baptist, which her father helped to build the original structure. During recent years, Alice was active with the Flower Club and was currently Galilee’s eldest member. Alice was quietly spiritual allowing her lead an independent, faithful life in her home. She was known for her splendid formal dinner parties and her beautiful flower garden. She also had a gift for hooking rugs.

Alice was presented with an Appreciation of Dedication award on June 3, 2006 from Galilee and a Certificate of Citizenship on her 100th birthday from the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office.

Alice leaves to cherish her memories: a loving daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Frederick Brown; a devoted son, James, Jr.; three grandsons and their wives, Mark and Candace Brown, Treg and Pamela Brown, and Christopher and Tess Brown. She is also survived by four great-granchildren: Alexandra, Zachary, Morgen and Charlotte – all of New Jersy; two nieces, Frances Quarles and Barbara Poindexter Frazier; three nephews, Robert and John Grooms and David Proctor; a host of grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Galilee Baptist Church, 3598 Three Notch Road, Kents Store, VA 23084 with the Rev. Otis R. Spellman, eulogist. Interment will follow in the church cemtery.
