The Lord sent an angel to pick one of His most beautiful flowers out of His garden, our father. Eugene Linwood “Son” Houchens, Jr. went peacefully to be with his Lord on Friday, February 8, 2013.
Our father was born August 31, 1917 in Louisa County, Virginia. He was the oldest son of fifteen children, born to the late Eugene, Sr. and Elizabeth Houchens. His wife of 65 years preceded him in death (by 9 days) on January 29, 2013. His four sisters Marie, Elizabeth and Alice Houchens and Lucille Yancey; five brothers Ralph, James, Harry Lee, John William and Cornelius Houchens; two granddaughters Linda Johnson and Ashley Christian; two great- grandsons Joshua Jackson and Hekeam Rice and four son-in-laws Isaac Ransom, Harold Anderson, Milton Johnson and Samuel Jackson all preceded him in death.
Our father was baptized at a young age and became a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was the oldest member of the church at the time of his death. He attended faithfully until his health failed. He was a devoted usher and loved to usher with his friend, the late Jerry Taylor. Eugene retired from JoPa Swimming Company. He had a love for his horses, farming and helping others.
Eugene leaves to cherish his memories six daughters: Velma Johnson, Maude Ransom, Dorothy (Salt) Rice of Philadelphia, PA, Julia Jackson, and Angie E. Anderson of Mineral, VA and Frances M. (Sylvester) Smith of Louisa, VA, nineteen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren and twelve great-great grandchildren, two sisters: Hannah Hunter and Dorothy Henson of Mineral, VA, two sister-in-laws: Bertha D. and Alberta Houchens of Mineral, VA and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. A devoted niece (Catherine Jackson) who was his caregiver until he resided at Louisa Health & Rehab Center and devoted family friends Leroy Sawyer, Joe Sawyer, and Emma Butler.
Our father has gone to join his wife, parents, sibling and friends Elise Sawyer, Elizabeth and Albert Butler, Sam and Rebecca Hunter, Lena Hunter, Edmond and Sarah Henson and Mary Butler. “Over The Track Family”
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Ebenezer Baptist Church 864 Pendleton Road Mineral, VA 23117 with Rev. House officiating and the Rev. Temple Anderson, Sr., eulogist. Interment will follow in Houchens family cemetery.
